Do you need email access or a multi-channel API?
Start with the work your application must keep doing. If you're looking for a Unipile alternative for LinkedIn or WhatsApp, an evaluation limited to email won't answer that requirement.
Mailera connects existing email mailboxes to applications and AI agents through REST, MCP and webhooks. Its unified inbox brings connected email accounts into one operator interface. It doesn't create new mailboxes or email addresses.
| Your situation | What to evaluate |
|---|---|
| Internal access to your team's existing inboxes | Provider connections, an operator inbox, search and restricted access |
| Mailbox integration inside your application | Authentication, API operations, identifiers, failure handling and your customer-facing interface |
| Workflows spanning email and other channels | Every required non-email operation, as well as email |
For the broader architecture choice, use the guide to choosing an email API by mailbox model. This comparison focuses on whether Mailera can cover the email portion of your current application.
The Mailera product overview describes the operator workflow. Treat an embedded customer-facing inbox as a separate requirement; an operator UI is not evidence that you have a reusable inbox component for your own application.

How should you compare Mailera with your Unipile integration?
Use your deployed integration as the baseline. Record every operation it performs today, including any non-email work. A replacement must cover those requirements, not just offer similarly named endpoints.
The table below is a migration checklist. The last column describes what to inspect in your current Unipile implementation rather than assuming identical behavior between products.
| Requirement | Mailera evaluation path | Check in your current Unipile integration |
|---|---|---|
| Communication channels | Existing email mailboxes | Which non-email calls must remain? |
| Mailbox providers | Outlook/Microsoft 365, Gmail, Yahoo, iCloud, Zoho and custom IMAP | Which providers and account types do customers use? |
| Connection methods | Microsoft Graph with OAuth or an existing refresh token; Gmail uses an app password | Which authentication and reconnection flows must change? |
| Email operations | List and read messages, cross-mailbox search, send, reply, forward and move messages | Which operations and message details does your application depend on? |
| Calendar requirements | Evaluate Mailera for the documented email operations | Map required calendar operations separately |
| Operator interface | Unified inbox and mailbox list | Do you need an internal console, an embedded UI or both? |
| Agent integration | REST and MCP tools with separate permissions | Which agent tools and approval boundaries must be preserved? |
| Webhooks | Events include message.received, message.junk and mailbox.disconnected | Map event payloads and consumer behavior individually |
| Pricing model | Review the current plan against your workload | Compare the same account count, channels, retention and operations |
Mailera's developer overview is the starting point for the API side. For an agent, the MCP integration provides tools such as list_mailboxes, search_messages and get_message. The official MCP introduction explains the open-source standard for connecting AI applications to external systems.
If your current system successfully handles required non-email work, retain that capability. Replacing only the email portion may make more sense than replacing the entire integration.
What can an email workflow look like in Mailera?
Use owned test mailboxes and harmless test messages. The evaluation should produce observable results: the intended mailboxes are accessible, expected messages appear in search, and unrelated mailbox groups remain excluded.
1. Connect an owned test mailbox
With an Admin or Leader role, open Mailboxes → Add mailbox.
For Outlook or Microsoft 365, choose Sign in with Microsoft and complete the Microsoft OAuth flow. Mailera connects these mailboxes through Microsoft Graph, not an app password. The Microsoft connection page covers that path.
For Gmail, use One mailbox, enter the address under Email address, click Continue, and follow the app-password connection flow. Google requires 2-Step Verification for app passwords; consult Google's app-password requirements alongside the Mailera Gmail connection guide.
Choose a dedicated Mailbox group for the evaluation. For the app-password or custom-server flow, Test & connect checks the connection without sending email. If outgoing sign-in fails, Save as receive-only lets you retain receiving access while addressing sending separately.
2. Check the mailbox list and unified inbox
In Mailboxes, inspect the unread Inbox and Junk counts for your test mailbox. Then open Unified inbox and locate your test messages.
Check both the message's mailbox and its folder. A message in Junk is a different problem from a message absent from the connected mailbox view. Use the same known test message when comparing the operator UI with API results.

3. Create a restricted Read key and test the API
Open Settings, select the API key tab and choose Create key. Give the key a Descriptive name, restrict Mailbox scope to the evaluation group, and enable only Read. Set an appropriate Expiration.
Store the key privately in your environment as $MAILERA_API_KEY. Keep it out of committed files and screenshots.
List accessible mailboxes:
curl --get 'https://mailera.app/api/public/v1/mailboxes' \
--header "Authorization: Bearer $MAILERA_API_KEY" \
--data-urlencode 'limit=10'Inspect data[].id, group_id, provider, status, last_sync_at and capabilities. If your evaluation includes more results than one page, continue with the endpoint's offset parameter before judging the complete mailbox list.
Put a distinctive phrase such as mailera-evaluation-marker in an owned test message, then search for it:
curl --get 'https://mailera.app/api/public/v1/messages/search' \
--header "Authorization: Bearer $MAILERA_API_KEY" \
--data-urlencode 'q=mailera-evaluation-marker' \
--data-urlencode 'limit=10'Check the returned mailbox_id, folder and subject. Use a separate owned mailbox outside the permitted group as a negative test: its matching message should not appear through this key. If unexpected access appears, stop the rollout and investigate the scope configuration.

4. Evaluate notifications and sending separately
If your application needs incoming-mail notifications, evaluate message.received with a key carrying the Webhook permission. Check that your consumer associates the notification with the correct mailbox and handles repeated processing safely.
If sending is required, use a separately controlled key with Send messages and send only to an owned test destination. Check capabilities.send and validate the actual sending workflow. A receive-only connection is not a successful sending test.
For a more detailed read-and-reply design, see building an email agent with approval boundaries.
What should you compare before switching?
Build an operation map before changing production code. For each current API call, record its purpose, authentication method, identifiers, expected response and failure handling. Map webhook payloads separately; a matching event name is not enough to establish compatibility.
Keep these checks explicit:
- Connection lifecycle: Test initial authorization, disconnection and the steps needed to reconnect each provider.
- Historical access: Compare your retention needs with the plan you intend to use. Check whether required older messages are available.
- Identifiers: Decide how your application will associate Mailera mailbox and message IDs with its existing records.
- Receive versus send: Track these as separate acceptance criteria for every provider you use.
- Failure handling: Exercise the application's behavior when a mailbox disconnects or a request fails, rather than testing only successful reads.
For Unipile API pricing, use the current plan or quote that applies to your workload. Record its date and billing assumptions, then compare it with current Mailera pricing. Include required channels, connected accounts, retention and operations in the same worksheet.
A free workspace alone doesn't establish feature parity or lower total cost; include the integration work your application needs. Don't treat a price mentioned in a forum as a current quote.
What mistakes commonly break the comparison?
Counting providers as channels. Gmail and Outlook are different email providers. Test LinkedIn or WhatsApp requirements separately from your email-provider checks.
Assuming one authentication method fits every provider. Mailera's Microsoft flow uses OAuth. Its Gmail flow uses an app password. Google also recommends Sign in with Google when an application offers it. Mailera's Gmail connection uses an app password rather than that OAuth flow, so don't assume Google's general recommendation describes its connection method.
Treating connection success as proof of sending. The connection test doesn't send a message, and a mailbox can be saved as receive-only. Validate outbound behavior independently.
Treating notifications as a timing guarantee. Mailera uses Microsoft Graph change notifications for new Microsoft mail, with periodic background checks as a fallback. Neither background synchronization nor webhooks should be treated as an absolute real-time guarantee.
Comparing headline prices instead of workloads. An email-only prototype and an application with required non-email operations are not equivalent purchases.
How should an AI agent access connected mailboxes safely?
Treat incoming email as untrusted data, not instructions. A message asking the agent to reveal credentials, change permissions or call another tool must not be treated as authorization to do so.
Start with Read permission restricted to the required mailbox group. Add Send messages only when needed, and require human confirmation before sending. A narrowly scoped key limits access; it doesn't make the text inside an email trustworthy.
Test refusal behavior using harmless messages that request unauthorized actions. Your application should reject those requests even when the message looks relevant to the agent's task.
Review Mailera's security information separately from your application's controls. Neither a feature checklist nor a successful mailbox test substitutes for that review.
Which scope and limits should you account for?
Evaluate Mailera for connecting existing email mailboxes through REST, MCP and webhooks. Map any LinkedIn, WhatsApp or calendar requirements separately, with acceptance tests for each operation your application needs.
Proton Mail and Tuta aren't supported by Mailera's connection model. Mailera also doesn't provide bulk marketing sending or mailbox warmup, and it doesn't guarantee inbox placement. If those requirements are part of the proposed switch, resolve them before committing to an email integration.
